Eller, Chancellor's Professor of English and the Director of the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies, Indiana University School of Liberal Arts (IUPUI), will talk about the contexts and themes of the book Fahrenheit 451, and introduce Ray Bradbury's views on the influence of technology and media on our lives, to be followed by Q&A and a short discussion on these topics. Dr. Eller will bring a few artifacts to the keynote session. |

Activities: Dr. Cecil Bohanon, professor of Economics at Ball State University, Allen Hutson, Risk Analyst, and Sam Weller, a professor at Columbia College Chicago and Ray Bradbury's authorized biographer, will be our panelists to lead the community wide public forum. They will speak about a variety of controls in the past and the present, such as government control, media control, political control, etc. Then the participants share their stories about control reflected in their daily life, in the legal system, in education, and in TV and newspapers, to be followed by a discussion to conceptualize the participants' stories. Date: February 25th, 2016 (Registration); February 29th., 2016 (event) Time: 6 P.M.- 7 P.M. (event) Location: Ball Room of the Ball State Student Center Fee: Free, open to the public. Please fill out the Muncie Big Read Pre-Events Survey: https://bsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2honV5iziicWRN3 If you would like to be a participant of the Muncie Big Read Artistic competition, please indicate the type of format (music, mini-film/short video, cartoon, dancing, painting, performance, etc.) you will use in question 8. If you just want to be a member of the audience of the Muncie Big Read Artistic Competition, please type in Audience in question 8. All Muncie citizens and students are encouraged to submit an artistic work for the Muncie Big Read Artistic Competition. The deadline to register for the Muncie Big Read Artistic Competition is on February 25th., 2016. The final event will be held in the Ball Room of the Ball State Student Center on February 29th., 2016 (6 P.M. – 7 P.M). The yellow and green parking lots near the Ball State Student Center are free after 5 P.M. Criteria for the Big Read Artistic Competition 1. Gain Attention: Artistic work can serve as an important tool for engaging people in community issues. The ultimate goal for this event is to motivate people in Muncie to participate in the Big Read activities and to discuss the issues that people really care about in our community through entertaining and interesting artistic work. It is very important that people in our community are aware of the activities and resources that we provide. Therefore, if your work can draw the attention of a large segment of the audience, you will have a higher chance of winning this competition. 2. Reflect one of the themes of the book Fahrenheit 451. Your artistic work should reflect one of the themes in Fahrenheit 451, such as: Censorship versus the freedom to pursue knowledge Knowledge versus ignorance Power, manipulation and social control Independent thinking versus conformity and totalitarian control Technology and the control of knowledge access Other themes based on your understanding of the book. We will set up tables for you to exhibit your work. If you need to perform or sing, we will set up a stage for you. You will be responsible for the equipment/music needed for your work. 3. 2. The contestants who are not winners will have a chance to receive SpecialRecognition awards. 3. All participants and the audience will have a chance to receive the exciting gifts awarded through raffles to be held during the event on Feb. 29th., 2016. 4. All participants and the audience at the event will receive the book Fahrenheit 451, the reading guidelines, and the brochures used during the Muncie Big Read Artistic Competition. Donations Ball State University’s Office of Community Engagement will provide cookies, veggie trays, a cheese & cracker tray, lemonade, iced tea, and water, in the amount up to $300 for the event. Minnetrista will provide family memberships for the winners. The Muncie Cornerstone Center for the Arts will provide a class certificate worth $75.00 for the raffle to be held during the event. Teachers College of Ball State University will provide Award Certificates to the winners. We highly appreciate your contributions to the Muncie Big Read Artistic Competition! Fahrenheit 451 was published in 1953. This was the year that the Korean War ended. World War II had ended less than a decade before. In 1954 Voice of America began broadcasting jazz music around the world. The book discussion will address the storyline's link to trends in politics, music, literature, and technology.

Unit was staggered in classes and stretched from October 25 - December 11. Between 300-350 students read the book during that time.
